BritishRX Supercars 2015: Andy Scott Reigns at Croft

Something I decided to do in 2015 on the blog was to include reports on the Supercar Class from the British Rallycross Championship, seeing as I write about the Supercar Class activities in both WorldRX & EuroRX over at http://www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk as well as a growing number of SuperNational & Retro Rallycross articles…

So here goes…

The 2015 MSA British Rallycross Championship began its season with the opening round taking place at the Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire.

In one of the best entries for the Supercar Class seen for many years at a British event, spectators were treated to a superb days racing, something which will no doubt be partly due to the renewed enthusiasm and rise to prominence of Rallycross, as a result of the recent partnership between BARC and the British Rallycross committee as well as the added popularity and expansion of WorldRX & EuroRX in the past two years.

It was Albatec Racing Team Principal Andy Scott, driving his Peugeot 208 Supercar, who took a convincing win to head home Ollie O’Donovan in his Ford Focus Mk2 and Kevin Procter in his Mk7 Ford Fiesta. Scott last raced in the British Rallycross Championship in 2011 where he finished runner up to Julian Godfrey. During 2013 he piloted a Peugeot 208 in EuroRX and in last year he ran a two car team with Jacques Villeneuve, Ramona Karlsson, David Binks, Davey Jeanney and Ollie O’Donovan in WorldRX.

Scott was on pole for the A Final of the Supercars in after taking two fastest heat times with Procter and O’Donovan joining him on the front row. O’Donovan was due to debut his new Ford Fiesta Supercar, which he plans to compete in both BritishRX & EuroRX but it was not ready on time, and he switched back to the car he used last year. Procter debuted his Fiesta last year and it was showing a much more improved performance after a winter of preparation.

The second row saw British and European Rallycross legend Pat Doran in his LD Motorsport Citroen DS3 and Steve Mundy in his Mk2 Ford Focus line up along with Andy Grant in his Ford Focus. Fan favourite Mad Mark Watson in his Citroen Xsara and 2014 British Rallycross Champion Julian Godfrey completed the grid after Godfrey had won the Supercar B Final to compete in the A Final.

It had been a surprisingly tough day for Godfrey with the normally bulletproof Mk6 Ford Fiesta Supercar breaking a mainshaft in the gearbox in one heat and then suffering electrical issues in another. During the first half of the 2014 season, Godfrey was near enough unstoppable against the other entries.

Scott led from the start with O’Donovan getting the better of Procter to move into second place, while the other drivers fought for position with Doran, who temporarily got the better of Procter for third. Midway through the first lap and Procter was back into third and set about O’Donovan, the pair becoming embroiled in a race long battle that would allow Scott to gradually move ahead and control the race from the front. Godfrey meanwhile had set about moving up the field but it was a tough task for the 2014 Champion and eventually he got the better of Grant and Mundy to then chase Doran through to the end. Scott held on to take the win with a close battle for second, O’Donovan holding off Procter, whilst Doran held off Godfrey for fourth place.

After the event, Andy Scott was delighted with his performance.

“What a great way to start the season. The car was great all day, all the team worked really hard to rebuild a car capable of victory and everything went according to plan. At Lydden we’ll also have Mark Flaherty out for his first event of the year, and I’m looking forward to building on these great results as we bid for the title.”

2nd place man Ollie O’Donovan was just as happy with his outing in the Focus.

“I’m very happy with second position. We didn’t have a great start to the day, with turbo and engine problems, and we were been down on power all day. We’ve been working hard with the tyres here, we tried four sets and eliminated two of those, and we will have more improvements to come.”

The 2015 MSA British Rallycross Championship moves onto Lydden Hill in Kent for Round 2 of the series on Easter Monday where several more Supercar entries are expected.
